At the time I converted this car to a Sox & Martin clone, I was working with Diane Sox (Ronnie’s wife) and Buddy Martin. They gave me permission to convert my 1968 Hemi Barracuda Clone to a replica of the Sox & Martin Super Stock car from 1968. It’s one of the most fun things I’ve ever done.
The first thing that had to be done was to repaint the car in the red, white and blue of the original. I had that done at my restoration shop. From there on, it was a matter of handling the details such as putting on decals, using the blue headlights, etc. I had a great graphics guy that did a lot of work for me, and he used real gold leaf on the car. This car was accurate in every way possible.
When we raffled off the 2008 Sox & Martin car, Diane and Buddy came to Mopars at the Strip in Las Vegas for the presentation. I brought this car, and was able to ride down the drag strip with Buddy at the wheel. It was a real highlight for me.
Driving on the streets and freeways in Phoenix is a real kick. When you pass someone that knows what the car represents, it makes their day. If they don’t recognize it for what it is, it still makes them wonder. There’s no way to be subtle when driving a beast like this in full Sox & Marten dress!
